Beginners Guide to Jet Skis
Planning on renting jet skis for the first time this summer? How exciting! At Callville Bay Resort & Marina, we’ve answered some of the most commonly asked questions below to help you feel more comfortable before your thrilling adventure.
What are “jet skis”?
Jet Ski is actually the brand name of a personal watercraft manufactured by Kawasaki. It’s a term most people commonly use to describe any type of personal watercraft (PWC).
Do you need to be a certain age to rent a PWC?
Yes. At Callville Bay Marina, renters must be 21 years of age or older and present a valid automobile driver’s license. To learn more, read the general information section on our website.
What are the steps to operating a PWC?
Most personal watercrafts are fairly easy to use. Once you are safely sitting on the watercraft you will locate the start and stop buttons. You will also see the throttle on the handlebar and the reverse lever for when you need to back up (not stop). It’s important to also attach the shut-off clip to your vest or wrist for safety in case you are separated from the PWC.
To operate your personal watercraft, press the start button. Once you are ready to move forward, slowly engage the throttle. Be sure to take it easy until you get the feel for it. To stop, release the throttle and you will slowly lose power until you come to a complete halt. The marina staff will assist you with further guidelines and instructions.
How many riders are allowed on at once?
The seating capacity on our personal watercraft rentals is up to 2 adults. Please do not operate a PWC with more than two adults, as this can be dangerous.
Are they easy to maneuver?
PWCs are quite easy to maneuver. It is similar to driving a motorbike, where you steer with handles versus a wheel. They are also much smaller than boats, so you’re able to turn and fit through coves and canyons much easier.
